Calaverite, or Gold Telluride, is an uncommon telluride of gold, a metallic mineral. It was first discovered in Calaveras County in 1861, and named for the county in 1868.

The mineral often has a metallic luster, and its color may range from a silvery white to a brassy yellow.

I tested this at my bench and found all indications pointing to it being Calaverite. I ruled out pyrite and chalcopyrite. An acid test left bright shinny particles in the bowl and dissolved most everything else. A GIA expert told me that my testing also shows it to be Calaverite. Regardless, this is a beautiful cabochon that will make gorgeous jewelry or keep it as a specimen, if you find you don't like it, there is a 100% money back guarantee, send it back, if you find it's not Calaverite I will pay for all shipping costs if you don't want it. My price is greatly reduced because of the unknown.
